The cost of obtaining 20 grams of protein from 5.5 ounces
of steak is six times more than the same amount of protein in six and
two-thirds slices of whole wheat bread (1).
From the Pulitzer Prize nominated book Diet For A New
America, by John Robbins:
Current cost for one pound of protein from wheat:
$1.50
Current cost for one pound of protein from beefsteak:
$15.40
A
vegetarian diet trims grocery bills and long-term health care costs, according
to a recent article on the MSN.com Web site. That’s because the healthy staples
of a plant-based diet, including beans, lentils, and rice, are much less
expensive per pound than chicken, tuna, or beef. People who follow a vegan diet
also have less risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic
illnesses, which means they don’t spend as much money on doctors, drugs, and
hospitals as do meat-eaters. (2)
Harry
and Mary give birth to baby Barry (Technically, it was just Mary…). The week after Barry is born, Harry and
Mary decide to replace three hamburger meals a week with three pasta meals a
week. Because of that one simple
change, by the time that Barry turns 18 and leaves for college, Harry and Mary
would have saved $2130.23*.
Twenty-one
hundred bucks buys a lot of textbooks, or, in Harry and Mary’s case, a
well-earned week of rest and relaxation in beautiful Wildwood, New Jersey.
Free of
charge, just for going burgerless.
