In
The Beginning... As the result of the incessant
and non-stop nagging of a close personal friend of mine (thanks, Jill), I
found myself standing at the starting line of the 1999 Chris Thater Memorial
5K run in Binghamton, NY. Despite being only 2 months shy
of my 40th birthday, this was the first running race that I had ever
participated in. I finished that run
that day, crossing the finish line unaware of the fact that I had just
completed an event that would come to alter the course of my life. Rekindling a competitive flame
that had not burned within me for quite some time, I became “hooked”, as they
say, and am now the veteran of over 50 races ranging in distance from 5Ks to
marathons. As my training progressed,
I became intrigued with the connection between nutrition and performance,
turning myself into a personal testing laboratory and using my training and
races to learn as much as I could.
Eventually I took it to the next level by aligning myself with the
International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) and obtaining dual
certifications as both a Certified Fitness Trainer (CFT) and a Specialist in
Performance Nutrition (SPN). In 1999, at the age of 40, I was
a guy who jogged 4 miles a week.
Eight years later my running resume included: ·
Finisher of over 50 competitive races ·
Six-time Forks 15K finisher ·
Five-time Vestal XX finisher ·
Six-time Red Baron Half-Marathon finisher ·
Six-time Steamtown Marathon finisher That
First Small Step... In my first life I spent over 24 years in the cube farms of corporate America. If someone had told me on my 40th birthday that I would finish 6 marathons in the next 8 years, I would have laughed in their face. But I did, and as I think back on my transformation from captain couch potato to marathon finisher, I realize that it really wasn’t as difficult as I would have thought. As much as I would have liked to, I did not simply wake up one morning with a superhuman ability to transform myself into a new person. Instead, I simply committed to one small, simple, intelligent, sustainable change. And then another, and then another. These small improvements, strung together over time, allowed me to not only improve my athletic performance, but the quality of my life overall. What I learned, as I progressed through this transformation, is that the longest of journeys consists of nothing more than a series of small steps. Whatever your goal – to lose weight, live healthier, improve athletic performance, this approach will work for you also, and my education, experience, and knowledge will help you benefit from my successes while avoiding my mistakes. But no journey will ever be completed; no goal will ever be achieved unless… You’re willing
to take that first small step. Larry
